Google Wave è un flop?

Negli ultimi tempi si è parlato tanto, nel bene e nel male, di Google Wave, la novità di casa Google che promette di essere il primo esempio di web totale. Ma la creatura di Big G non è stata solo oggetto di lodi e pareri positivi: parecchie sono le critiche e i dubbi che Google Wave ha attirato a sé in questi giorni, e la responsabilità sembra essere proprio della compagnia di Mountain View.

In particolare la società Google è stata accusata di voler creare troppe aspettative attorno a Google Wave, magnificando il prodotto in maniera eccessiva e attirando a sé gli utenti con l’esca di un’anteprima beta riservata a 100.000 utenti, una mossa pubblicitaria sfociata in un’asta su eBay dove gli inviti per Google Wave hanno raggiunto in questi giorni la quota di 5.000 dollari. Un prezzo troppo alto per una società che, a conti fatti, nel campo del web sociale si è mossa sempre con notevole ritardo.

In questi anni Google ha puntato di più sull’integrazione tra i prodotti (Gmail, Google Docs, Reader, Picasa, ma soprattutto Blogger e Adsense) che sul carattere prettamente “social” delle sue applicazioni. Ma internet non è solo un posto dove cercare informazioni e fare e-commerce, ma un luogo dove divertirsi, giocare e conoscere persone nuove, in una parola “socializzare“.

Non aver compreso il carattere “social” del web ha permesso a network come MySpace e Facebook di espandersi proprio a danno di Google, che solo nel 2007 ha creato un team per studiare le tendenze dei social network più popolari, in risposta al successo inarrestabile di Facebook. Da qui il dubbio di non potersi fidare ciecamente di una compagnia che non ha saputo comprendere per tempo tutti gli aspetti del web sociale.

Google Wave integra perfettamente una serie di componenti sociali come le e-mail e le multichat, e potrebbe segnare la prima vittoria di Google nel campo dei social network. Ma questo, probabilmente, non avverrà in tempi brevi. Il suo potenziale di successo è molto alto, ma i risultati dovranno essere valutati in una prospettiva a lungo termine.
