Il taglio definitivo colpirà 425 dipendenti ed è stato annunciato da Owen Van Natta, CEO del gruppo di proprietà News Corporation che ha giustificato così: “Capisco che questi cambiamenti sono difficili per molti. Sono però anche necessari per la salute di lungo periodo e per la cultura di MySpace. Il nostro intento è di ritornare ad uno sviluppo di innovazione centrato sui nostri utenti e sul nostro prodotto“. Il tutto è da verificarsi a seguito della fuga degli utenti che sembrano non preferire più l’innovativo social network, ed al suo posto stabilizzarsi su un qualcosa di minimalista ma funzionale allo stesso tempo: Facebook. Secondo la stampa americana, inoltre, MySpace non ha più introiti suoi, ma vive solo ed esclusivamente degli accordi presi con Google e di conseguenza, visto che il contratto tra i due Big è in scadenza (e Google non è molto propensa a rinnovare il contratto), Rupert Murdoch sta cercando di mettersi al riparo. Ha infatti dichiarato che: “Solo Dio sa cosa faremo con MySpace“. Secondo i lavoratori del settore marketing, in questo preciso momento del mercato, se non ci saranno pubblicità in grado di reggere il portale, si auspica una chiusura del social network. Inoltre Chris DeWolfe, precedente CEO e cofondatore del sito, ha lasciato il suo posto prima di ulteriori disastri. Il quesito adesso è in un bivio che vede il rinnovo totale di MySpace oppure una chiusura.
