Forse molti di voi non se lo ricordano (o forse non lo sanno proprio) ma fino a 4-5 anni fa le persone passavano il proprio tempo su Second Life invece che su Facebook e Twitter. Nato nel 2003, Second Life ha conosciuto un enorme successo nel biennio 2006/2008, per poi crollare miseramente e finire nel dimenticatoio.

Ma cosa è successo esattamente a Second Life? Tutto e niente, se consideriamo che oggi la piattaforma conta circa un milione di utenti attivi, esattamente gli stessi del “biennio d’oro”. Gli utenti non sono cresciuti ed i tentativi per espandere la base di utenza sono falliti miseramente, come ha ammesso recentemente anche Philip Rosedale, fondatore di Second Life. Nel corso degli anni non sono arrivati nuovi utenti, ma quelli presenti non sono scappati, garantendo comunque alla piattaforma una solida base.

Un milione di utenti attivi non sono pochi, certo, si tratta di una cifra ridicola se paragonata a quella di grandi colossi, in ogni caso l’ecosistema Second Life genera circa 750.000 dollari l’anno, una cifra più che sufficiente per mantenere una piccola società come Linden Labs. Philip ammette di essere pienamente soddisfatto dei risultati ottenuti, considerando che in meno di dieci anni il progetto Second Life è cresciuto fino a livelli inimmaginabili ed ha ottenuto un successo oltre ogni aspettativa iniziale.

All’apice del successo Second Life era coccolato e protetto dai media, poi, causa l’avanzare di Facebook e di altre social media platform Second Life è stato messo sempre più in disparte, anche per colpa della stessa Linden Labs, incapace di rinnovare il prodotto e fornire nuovi contenuti. Nel corso della sua vita “di massa” Second Life ha ospitato concerti, dibattiti politici (addirittura Obama ha usato Second Life per la campagna elettorale del 2008) nonchè uffici di marchi famosi come IBM. Un bel successo per un progetto nato quasi per caso nel 2003, quando il web era ben diverso da quello attuale.
