Microsoft e Skype: ok dall’Unione Europea

Microsoft compra SkypeLe preoccupazioni di Microsoft circa l’autorizzazione da parte dell‘Unione Europea atta a procedere verso l’acquisto di Skype, ostacolato anche dall’italiana Messagenet che aveva invocato il blocco delle operazioni per motivi di anti-trust, sono state spazzate via.

La Commissione Europea ha infatti dato il proprio via libera all’acquisizione, quindi Microsoft può completare regolarmente l’acquisto del celebre servizio client VoIP alla roboante cifra di 8,5 miliardi di dollari. L’autorizzazione è arrivata venerdì pomeriggio, dando modo dunque a Redmond di togliersi un bel pensiero dalla mente.

In un breve comunicato, la Commissione ha spiegato che, dopo aver analizzato a fondo la questione studiando i vari movimenti di mercato conseguenti al passaggio definitivo di Skype sotto le grinfie di Microsoft, di aver stabilito come non ci fosse alcun problema di concorrenza per i competitor. Secondo l’Unione Europea, il mercato è talmente vasto di protagonisti che sarà difficile si possa presentare una situazione di monopolio targata Microsoft-Skype.

È stata verificata anche la posizione di Windows Live e Lync, ma la Commissione non ha rivelato nulla di illecito e quindi non ha trovato alcuna motivazione nelle opposizioni avanzate da Messagenet ed altre aziende che temono come l’acquisto di Skype possa mettere Microsoft in una posizione estremamente favorevole sul mercato.

Questo un estratto dal comunicato stampa in lingua inglese diffuso dall’Unione Europea:

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the Internet voice and video communication provider Skype by Microsoft Corporation because the deal would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) 1 or any substantial part of it.

For enterprise communications, the investigation confirmed that Skype has a limited market presence for these products and does not compete directly with Microsoft’s enterprise communication product Lync, which is used mostly by large enterprises.

The Commission’s investigation also focused on possible conglomerate effects, since Skype and Microsoft are active in neighbouring markets.

The transaction was notified to the Commission for regulatory clearance in the EEA on 2 September 2011.
