Privacy prima di tutto. Questa è la nuova linea del social network Facebook, che ha deciso di cedere alle richieste di utenti e di Governi e tutelare la privacy degli utenti. Il tutto è partito da una class action intrapresa da 20 cittadini Texani che hanno deciso di combattere il beacon.
Dopo questa decisione, è stato dichiarato che il social network stanzierà ben 10 milioni di dollari per mettere su una nuova fondazione indipendente che: “investa in progetti ed iniziative volte a promuovere la privacy e la sicurezza online”.

La causa era stata impiantata contr Facebook nell’agosto del 2008, con una accusa nei confronti della rete sociale di violazione di una serie di leggi tra cui: l’Electronic Communications Privacy Act e il Video Privacy Protection Act.

L’accusa principale era rivolta al sistema pubblicitario con i beacon. Dopo questa bufera, Facebook aveva deciso di permettere agli utenti di scegliere in modo consapevole o meno, se apparire nelle beacon laterali, ma questo non è bastato alla Corte Suprema statunitense, che ha deciso per la rimozione completa dei beacon laterali.
Il rappresentante legale di Facebook, Barry Schnitt, ha dichiarato che: “Abbiamo imparato molto dall’esperienza dei beacon, perché ha dimostrato quanto possa essere critico il fornire un controllo esteso all’utente su come i propri dati vengano condivisi. Abbiamo inoltre imparato come comunicare efficacemente tutti i nostri cambiamenti all’interno dell’esperienza dell’utente stesso. Non vediamo l’ora di creare questa fondazione, con il compito di indirizzare gli utenti della Rete verso un migliore controllo della propria privacy, particolarmente legata alle attività del social networking. Per rendere le loro pratiche online più serene, avendo una maggiore conoscenza e quindi un senso maggiore di controllo“.

Con questa dichiarazione di “colpe” e soprattutto con un costoso impegno per tutelare la privacy dei propri utenti, sembra che Facebook sia momentaneamente uscito fuori dalla bufera legale a tutela della privacy. Un argomento scottante per tutti i social network da sempre.
