Facebook può influenzare i voti? In Canada pensano di sì

Il 2 maggio in Canada si terranno le elezioni anticipate, dopo che il governo è caduto con un voto di sfiducia per oltraggio al Parlamento. In prossimità del voto, Elections Canada, organo indipendente responsabile dell’andamento delle elezioni federali e dei referendum del paese, ha vietato ai canadesi di fare propaganda politica ed elettorale su Facebook, magari pubblicando gli exit poll e i risultati parziali del voto.

La richiesta è stata diramata tramite comunicato stampa, ed è motivata dal timore che Facebook possa, in qualche modo, influenzare l’andamento del voto. Infatti gli exit poll sono fissati alle sette di sera, ma in Canada coesistono ben sette diversi fusi orari. Così le sette di sera in uno stato potrebbero corrispondere alle 9.30 del mattino di un altro.

La preoccupazione che Facebook possa spostare i voti da uno schieramento all’altro è tale da spingere Elections Canada a prendere provvedimenti, avvisando gli utenti Facebook che i trasgressori saranno puniti con una sanzione in denaro. E nelle ultime ore il divieto è stato esteso anche a Twitter.

C’è da dire che in America, durante le elezioni, l’uso dei social media non è stato vietato, anzi è stato addirittura incoraggiato e sfruttato dagli stessi candidati. Quindi stupisce il divieto del Canada ad usare i social networks. E viene da chiedersi cosa accadrebbe in Italia se Facebook o Twitter venissero vietati in vista delle prossime elezioni amministrative. Lo riterreste un provvedimento giusto?
