Il fenomeno di Facebook sembra necessitare di un ridimensionamento dato dalle statistiche (non ufficiali) dei paesi dell’Est. In effetti, sembra che il super network da 175.000.000 di utenti, non trovi spazio nella più grande comunità di navigatori mondiali: la Cina.
Il paese che conta circa 300 milioni di internauti, ha solo 1.000 iscritti a Facebook. Ci è passato Google che viene quotidianamente sorpassato dal rivale dagli occhi a mandorla Baidu, oppure il provider di posta e news Yahoo che ha un concorrente spietato come Sina e Sohu. In ultimo ma non per importanza è l’inutilizzo del client di messaggistica Messenger della Microsoft sorpassato dal cinese QQ.
Secondo i rumors il flop di Facebook in Asia è dovuto ad una molteplicità di fattori quali quelli culturali, politici ed economici che insieme fanno una barriera tra Oriente ed Occidente. I sociologi cinesi discutono sul fatto che molti cittadini cinesi non hanno interesse ad ampliare la propria cultura ed e le proprie conoscenze, ma soprattutto non hanno interesse a rendersi pubblici ed infatti gradiscono i network che utilizzano nickname.
La Cina comunque ha i propri social network come Xiaonei (nato a Dicembre 2005) ed il network della Università Tsinghua di Pechino che conta oltre 15.000.000 di utenti.
