Come ogni anno a partire dal 1972, si attende il 5 giugno, giornata in cui ricorre la Giornata Mondiale dell’Ambiente che viene promossa dalle Nazioni Unite per la sensibilizzazione dei Governi e dei cittadini sui temi che riguardano l’ambiente e la salute della Terra. Proprio quest’anno, l’argomento hot è la gestione delle foreste ed il controllo della loro salute per la prevenzione e la limitazione dei rischi legati ai cambiamenti del clima sulla Terra.
Con queste prerogative è stato lanciato dall’UNEP il programma per l’Ambiente delle Nazioni Unite che richiama fortemente il supporto della Billion Tree Campaign. Con questa iniziativa sono stati già piantati oltre 3 miliardi e 100 alberi in oltre 166 paesi del mondo e si è prefissato l’obiettivo di arrivare al piantaggio di 7 miliardi entro il dicembre del 2009. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, si sta basando il tutto sulla diffusione delle informazioni sui social network. Per poter dare il proprio contributo al raggiungimento di questo obiettivo, sarà necessario piantare un albero e comunicarlo o semplicemente iscriversi a Twitter all’indirizzo: www.twitter.com/UNEPandYou.
Iscrivendosi da oggi fino al 5 giugno, l’UNEP pianterà l’albero per noi. Sicuramente un’iniziativa lodevole che sta coinvolgendo milioni di iscritti nella blogosfera e tra i blog. Nello specifico la Billion Tree Campaign ha puntato su Twitter, la più nota piattaforma di microblogging per raggiungere il coinvolgimento di oltre 100.000 utenti e quindi, piantare altrettanti alberi.

Achim Steiner, Sottosegretario Generale e Direttore esecutivo dell’UNEP, per incentivare le persone ha dichiarato: “Se vogliamo raggiungere l’obiettivo di sette miliardi di alberi piantati, l’UNEP ha bisogno del sostegno di tutti: delle scuole e dalle associazioni di governi, imprese e singoli cittadini. Se la metà delle persone sul pianeta riuscisse a piantare un solo alberello da qui fino al 5 giugno, la campagna sarebbe ad un passo dal successo“. Allo stesso modo, nel mondo orientale, UNEP sta provando ad acquisire anche consensi dalla Cina, facendo una collaborazione con il più noto social network utilizzato dai giovani cinesi: Nei Xiao.
