Facebook: acquisizione Twitter non riuscita, Thiel parla al BusinessWeek

Sono passati ormai 3 mesi dal tentativo dal gigante Facebook di comprare il servizio di microblogging Twitter. Si è parlato di cifre stratosferiche: 500 milioni di dollari per l’esattezza. Ma purtroppo non si è giunti ad alcun punto fermo e le trattative si sono concluse negativamente. Oggi, a distanza di molti giorni, Peter Thiel (membro del consiglio di amministrazione del capitale pubblico Clarium) ha spiegato come mai l’annessione non è potuta avvenire in un’intervista fattagli da Businessweek.

E’ parso abbastanza chiaro che non sarebbe successo. Ha detto così Peter Thiel. Per quanto riguarda l’intera vicenda l’articolo continua:

Representatives of Twitter liked the sound of $500 million but balked when Facebook said its stock was worth $8 billion to $9 billion. Twitter’s team knew that Facebook was letting employees sell stock on the secondary market at company valuations ranging from $2 billion to $4 billion…

At that point, Facebook offered Twitter around $100 million in cash, with the rest of the deal in stock. Facebook said it would come up with the $100 million by selling more of its stock to outside investors. Twitter agreed on one condition: that the Facebook stock it received be valued at the price company shares garnered on the open market. Facebook blinked and the deal talks ended…

Facebook and Twitter haven’t completely walked away from one another. The two companies continue to talk, though there are no serious discussions going on, says the person close to Twitter.

Inizialmente i rappresentanti di twitter erano interessati all’offerta di 500 milioni di dollari. Però, al sentire che le azioni Facebook valevano tra gli 8 ed i 9 biblioni di dollari si sono fermati nelle trattative. Difatti il team di Twitter sapeva che il valore delle azioni, secondo una seconda valutazione di mercato, si aggirava tra i 2 ed i 4 bilioni, difatti questo era il prezzo con cui gli addetti Facebook le volevano rivendere. A questo punto Facebook ha offerto a Twitter 100 milioni di dollari in cash volendo rivendere parte delle sue azioni per acquistare l’uccellino. Ma i gestori di Twitter non si sono fidati e hanno voluto che le azioni Facebook fossero valutate seriamente e successivamente dare inizio alla compra/vendita. A questo punto le trattative si sono bloccate. Nonostane questo i due colossi si tengono in contatto.

E’ proprio questa la questione: con la monetizzazione, quanto varrà il social network realmente?
