I più recenti film di fantascienza, da Matrix ad Avatar, fino a Source Code hanno introdotto nel nostro immaginario il concetto di avatar, un clone di noi stessi che si muove e agisce all’interno di un universo virtuale. Ma questa tecnologia, che fino ad oggi sembrava destinata a rimanere nei confini degli effetti speciali, domani potrebbe diventare realtà.

Il dottor Doron Friedman, infatti, ha preso molto sul serio i possibili sviluppi di questa tecnologia, e insieme a un team di esperti internazionali sta studiando un modo per controllare il proprio clone/avatar attraverso le onde cerebrali. Friedman è a capo dell’Advanced Virtuality Lab (AVL) al centro interdisciplinare di Herzliya, in Israele, e la sua ricerca negli ultimi tre anni si è concentrata sulla prossima generazione di interfacce uomo-macchina, e il loro impatto sugli individui e sulla società.

L’attività principale dell’AVL è quello di costruire mondi virtuali e sperimentare nuove interfacce che verranno utilizzate nel prossimo futuro, e insieme studiare il comportamento della mente umana in un ambiente di realtà virtuale. Ma non è tutto.

Uno dei suoi progetti, denominato VERE (Virtual Embodment and Robotic Re-embodiment) riguarda il controllo di un avatar non solo sul piano virtuale, ma anche sul piano fisico, grazie ai nuovi sviluppi nel campo della robotica. VERE è stato finanziato dall’Unione Europea, e per l’occasione Friedman e il suo team hanno collaborato con il professor Rafael Malach del Weizman Institute of Science di Israele.

La squadra, così composta, è fra le prime al mondo ad utilizzare uno scanner cerebrale (fMRI) per controllare un’applicazione informatica in maniera interattiva e in tempo reale. Ciò significa che nel prossimo futuro un individuo potrebbe riuscire a controllare un avatar con la sola forza del pensiero, semplicemente attivando le corrette aree situate nel cervello.

Gli sviluppi di una simile tecnologia sono potenzialmente infiniti. In campo medico questo genere di comunicazione alternativa potrebbe migliorare sensibilmente la qualità della vita di pazienti disabili, con lesioni al midollo spinale o affetti da gravi patologie come la sclerosi multipla.

Ma un altro punto chiave del lavoro di Friedman è la telepresenza. Anche se abbiamo i telefoni, le e-mail e le videoconferenze, queste forme di comunicazione non possono trasmetterci le stesse sensazioni di un incontro faccia a faccia. In tal senso il team di AVL sta cerando di colmare questa lacuna, simulando gli effetti di un incontro reale in ambito virtuale utilizzando tecnologie quali videoconferenza, realtà virtuale e robotica per una interazione completa. Il progetto si chiama “Beaming” e consentirà alle persone di “teletrasportarsi” da un luogo fisico nel mondo ad un altro grazie a un avatar in grado di interagire con la popolazione locale della destinazione desiderata.
