PhotoDNA: Facebook e Microsoft combattono la pedopornografia

Nel lontano, ma non troppo, 2009 Microsoft aveva dato vita ad una nuova tecnologia mediante cui individuare le foto raffiguranti gli abusi sui minori presenti, in maniera tristemente comune, in rete, donandola poi, successivamente, al NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) al fine di contribuire, in maniera quanto più efficace possibile, nella lotta contro la pedopornografia sul web.

La tecnologia in questione, conosciuta anche come “robust hashing”, prevede il calcolo e l’analisi delle caratteristiche distintive di una specifica immagine disponibile online in modo tale da poterla poi abbinare ad ulteriori copie della medesima.

Il robust hashing, così come spesso accade per ogni nuova tecnologia, ha però avuto le sue pecche iniziali presentando quindi un funzionamento non esattamente corretto in corrispondenza di eventuali alterazioni rilevate in un’immagine.

Tuttavia, con il passare del tempo, Microsoft ha avuto modo di affinare il robust hashing arrivando quindi a dar vita al suo degno e ben più efficiente sostituto: il PhotoDNA.

Infatti, così come dichiarato anche dal New York Times, la nuova tecnologia offerta da Microsoft prevede la possibilità di identificare immagini in rete rientranti nella sfera della pedopornografia anche qualora dovessero risultare tagliate o alterate e, di conseguenza, difficilmente identificabili.

A servirsi per primo di PhotoDNA, secondo quanto dichiarato, sarà proprio Facebook, il tanto amato social network in blu, considerando, appunto, la necessità sempre più incalzante di una risorsa di tale tipologia.

Facebook, infatti, com’è risaputo e come di certo ben sapranno tutti i suoi utilizzatori, costituisce il principale servizio web adibito alla condivisione di foto ed immagini attualmente esistente (ogni mese vengono uploadate circa 3 miliardi di immagini).

L’utilizzo di PhotoDNA su Facebook ha avuto inizio nelle ultime ore e le immagini analizzate, nonostante il poco tempo, sembrerebbero già esserre parecchie migliaia.

Considerando dunque la notevole efficienza (o, quanto meno, così pare) di PhotoDNA, l’applicazione di tale tecnologia a Facebook potrebbe quindi consentire di individuare in modo ben più semplice eventuali criminali che, purtroppo, si aggirano tra i meandri del social network.
