La mania dei giocatori on line sembrerebbe essere cominciata con i social network, ma purtroppo non tutti sanno, tra i nuovi internauti, che non è proprio così. Infatti, già tempo addietro, con la nascita del web nacquero i primi giochi on line chiamati MMORPG (acronimo di giochi di ruolo online di massa). Questi giochi sono sicuramente portanti per considerare l’aspetto social del gioco on line, infatti è molto importante il fatto che la sfida durante le avventure on line non viene fatta con “mostri e nemici” semplicemente virtuali e comandati dalla memoria artificiale di un PC, bensì ci troviamo a combattere con degli avversari reali che sono in un’altra parte del globo.
Questo mercato, sembra che stia tornando di nuovo sulla cresta dell’onda e secondo le anticipazioni degli studiosi, tra il 2010 ed il 2014, il mercato mondiale dei giochi di ruolo on line di massa dovrebbe passare dai 6,2 miliardi di dollari agli 8,3 miliardi di dollari di rendita.


Attualmente il colosso che domina in questo settore è la software house americana Blizzard, con il 22% del suo mercato con MMORPG come “World of Warcraft” (alcuni la ricorderanno per titoli come Diablo, Starcraft e Warcraft). Ma anche un altro mercato si sta facendo avanti prepotentemente, ed è quello dell’area Asia Pacifico che vede il 72% degli utenti impegnati nei MMORPG. Qui le aziende che se lo contendono sono la Shanda, la NEtease, la Nexon e la NCSoft.
Nell’Europa Occidentale, invece, sembra che questo tipi di prodotti abbiano una concorrenza spietata fatta dai giochi on line sui social network e dai giochi su consolle che li battono di circa il 75% sull’utilizzo.
Ad oggi, i ricavi di questi giochi per le software house, vengono prodotti dagli importi (piccoli ovviamente) versati dagli utenti come abbonamento per giocare, ma di recente c’è un grande boom che vede la crescita del mercato degli oggetti virtuali per potenziarsi nei videogames. Questa attività è molto sviluppata soprattutto in Asia ed è vista dagli esperti come nuova vita di guadagno accanto alla classica pubblicità.
