Carol Bartz, CEO di Yahoo! ha dichiarato nelle scorse ore che il vero competitor del famoso portale non è più Google, ma Facebook, il social network numero uno nel mondo. Yahoo! ha sempre sofferto di un complesso di inferiorità nei confronti del motore di ricerca di Mountain View ed in questi ultimi anni ha fatto di tutto per battere Big G.

La Bartz è riuscita a far guadagnare terreno a Yahoo! (che prima della sua gestione era precipitato davvero in basso), e’ indubbio infatti che Yahoo! goda di maggior considerazione adesso rispetto a qualche anno fa.

Per superare Facebook, Carol ed il suo team dovranno faticare non poco. Nei prossimi mesi Yahoo! presenterà alcuni interessanti servizi social e migliorerà quelli già esistenti (come la mail, per esempio, che si arricchirà di nuove funzioni), nel tentativo di battere la concorrenza. La battaglia con Google sembra ormai persa, ma quella con Facebook deve ancora cominciare.

Carol è agguerrita e conosce bene le dinamiche del web, negli ultimi anni ha fatto un buon lavoro con Yahoo! e lo scenario futuro ricorda quello di dieci anni fa, con un competitor diverso. Non più Yahoo! Vs Google, ma Yahoo! contro Facebook.

Il social network di Mark Zuckerberg è in piena espansione, gli utenti iscritti sono 500 milioni e, secondo una stima recente, il sito vale ben 50 miliardi di dollari, un valore superiore a quello di eBay, per esempio. E l’espansione non sembra volersi fermare, anzi, Facebook è più popolare che mai (grazie anche al film The Social Network), nuovi servizi vengono lanciati continuamente (vedi i nuovi profili o l’introduzione della social inbox) e gli utenti passano tantissimo tempo a chattare, condividere foto, pubblicare filmati e giocare con FarmVille e FrontierVille (solo per citarne due).

Vedremo chi vincerà questa battaglia, anche se, nella guerra tra Yahoo! e Facebook potrebbe presto arrivare un terzo incomodo, ovvero Google. E non dimentichiamoci di Microsoft, che potrebbe scendere in campo con un proprio social network.
