Negli ultimi mesi stiamo assistendo ad una progressiva crescita di mondi virtuali su Facebook, grazie alla tecnologia flash. L’ultimo arrivato si chiama Reef Life, ed è stato sviluppato dalla Storybook Anytime, una società privata che si occupa dell’istruzione e alfabetizzazione dei bambini. Reef Life però non è solo un gioco di simulazione, ma si presenta come un ibrido tra mondo virtuale, Monopoli, e gioco di ruolo con ampi territori da esplorare. Il giocatore è un piccolo pesce che si è perduto nel mare dei Caraibi. Nei pressi di una barriera corallina incontra una balena che d’ora in poi sarà il suo mentore, e gli assegnerà nuovi compiti e attività da completare. Per ogni impresa il giocatore riceverà in cambio oggetti più o meno preziosi.

All’inizio il gioco è come un qualsiasi altro mondo virtuale. Dobbiamo esplorare le zone, fare visita agli amici, e costruire il proprio spazio personale. Ci sono 27 diverse aree da esplorare, ciascuna con i propri negozi e residenti. I posti da visitare non sono molti, ma più aumentano gli amici, più il gioco comincia a crescere, ad espandersi anche come territorio. Giocando è possibile raccogliere stelle marine per guadagnare monete e diverse bottiglie riciclabili che possono essere scambiate con altre monete.

Ma la caratteristica che differenzia Reef Life dagli altri mondi in 2D è che, nonostante l’ambientazione sia un po’ infantile, il gioco presenta alcuni aspetti di strategia finanziaria che non si trovano in altri giochi Facebook.

In Reef Life è possibile acquistare non solo oggetti ma anche conquistare (a un livello più avanzato) molteplici territori. Questi ultimi possono essere poi “subaffittati” ad altri giocatori in modo da godere di una percentuale su tutti gli acquisti fatti da terzi in quell’area.

Insomma si ha l’impressione che Reef Life introduca all’interno di una cornice “per bambini”, il concetto più adulto di “investimento” per insegare ai piccoli il valore del denaro.
